Senate President, Mr. David Mark, and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Aminu Tambuwal, have urged Nigerians not to lose hope in the face of the challenges facing the country.
In their separate New Year messages, they urged Nigerians to continue to work for the unity of the country.
Tambuwal added that the Independent National Electoral Commission must draw lessons from the recent smooth conduct of local government elections in Yobe State and be adequately prepared for the 2015 general elections.
Mark’s message was contained in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan, on Tuesday in Abuja.
The Senate President commended “the indomitable spirit of the citizenry.”
He noted that Nigeria remained one of the best nations in the world, stressing that it was so blessed with human and natural resources.
“All we need to do therefore is to honestly harness these resources for the good of all,” he added.
The Senate President lamented the current security, socio-political and economic challenges confronting the country and expressed optimism that they were surmountable.
He said, “The only difference is that the people themselves resolved to identify the problem and proffered a common solution, this is what we need in our own case, to reason together like one people and to solve our problems like one people.”
In his message, Tambuwal observed that despite being under emergency rule, the Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission and the people of the state ensured that the poll was a success.
A statement by Tambuwal’s Special Adviser, Media and Public Affairs, Mr. Imam Imam, quoted the Speaker as commending security agencies and the electorate in Yobe State for the peaceful poll.
Part of the statement reads, “The lesson in what happened in Yobe State should not be lost on all of us.
“Despite the security situation in the state, and operating under the state of emergency, YSIEC proved doubters wrong by conducting an election which was peaceful and whose outcome was credible.”
