Team Lagos started on a good note at the
weekend when they clinched their first gold medal in the swimming event
of the National School Sports Festival in Kwara State.
The medal came through Faith John who finished in 3:11.34 to win the 200m girls’ freestyle for primary schools.
In the 50-meter breaststroke for primary schools girls, Faith again won the bronze medal to add to the initial gold medal.
Lagos State also won bronze in the
200-meter freestyle for senior secondary schools boys as Bolaji
Ademulegun added to the medal haul.
The medal-winning streak continued with
Seun Adeola and Simon Ore’s feats in the 200m freestyle for Junior
Secondary Schools boys and the 100m breaststroke where they won bronze
medals respectively.
Meanwhile, the NSSF has commended the
activities of the Games’ screening committee following protests after
some athletes were disqualified for age discrepancy.
“You cannot get a flawless decision when
it comes to age-screening of athletes especially at age grade
competitions. We just have to do what we have to do,” NSSF Secretary
General, Olabisi Joseph, said.
“There is no viable way of perfectly
ascertaining the true ages of children. Even the MRI test have not been
perfect so we should not expect a perfect situation here.”
She assured that all protests would be addressed and that any complaint found reasonable would be revisited.
